Online storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive and others promise safekeeping of your documents and other files you upload to their services, but it's always wise to take extra precautions when it comes to your most sensitive files. Keeping that sensistive data off of your laptop, other mobile devices, and online services is the best strategy for mobile security, but for those files you do upload to?"the cloud" or need to take with you on the road, you can add an extra layer of security to your files with an encryption tool.
The easiest way to protect your data on a laptop is to encrypt the whole drive using TrueCrypt or built-in tools like BitLocker on Windows or File Vault on the Mac. However, this won't necessarily safeguard the files you upload to cloud storage services.
When you upload files to a service like Dropbox, you need to encrypt them first for the utmost in security. This way, even if a hacker got into your Dropbox account, the files would still be protected. Your options for securing your files in one of these services include:
Encrypt the files and folders you want to protect using TrueCrypt then store that encrypted container inside your Dropbox, Google Drive, or other online storage space. You can also zip those files and folders with a tool like 7-Zip, which allows you to create a password-protected archive file with strong AES-256 encryption. There are also third-party encryption tools like BoxCryptor, which create an encryption container for your files within these services. Securing your files is as easy as saving them to the BoxCryptor or other service.Of the file storage and syncing services available, I'd recommend looking into Box.net if you're sharing files with others, because of its strong content access controls or SpiderOak for its strong "no password storage" and other security policies. All of the services have their advantages, though, and can be made more secure if you encrypt the most important files in them.
