Backup Your Gmail (Just in Case)

Yesterday, many Gmail users were unable to access their email for more than an hour--an outage that reminds us how scary it is to be reliant on one service. Google updated its Apps Status Dashboard yesterday saying the issue was resolved, but some users may still experience message delays (but not to worry, the messages will still be delivered).

So what can you do to save your emails and back them up (not just if Google's servers are unreachable, but also if your account is ever compromised or something catastrophic happens like all of Google's servers get wiped out)? There are a few options, actually:

You can download your emails as POP3 in an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird, use online backup service Backify (designed to backup your Gmail and other cloud data), or use a script or desktop program to backup Gmail. Learn more about these options and how they compare.

The next time Gmail.com is down, you may be able to get to Gmail still using an alternate method. Lifehacker details a few methods that may work, including trying the plain HTML version of Gmail. If you haven't installed Gmail Offline?from the Chrome Web Store yet, now's a good time to do so too. This will let you use Gmail if you lose your connection--and possibly if Gmail loses its connection.
