Your Refurbished Cell Phone and You

There are so many smart phones out there now it's no surprise there has been a rise in refurbished and used cell phone demand. With the recent release of the Droid Razr Maxx many phone trade in companies have seen a massive increase in Droid Razr trade in's. Many phone trade in companies have seen several come in just days after the new phones announcement! This is typical of any new phone, but this is a unique opportunity as the Droid Razr is only a few months old, so any smart shopper out there can get a nearly brand new phone that is top of the line on the cheap. But this article is for when you get a phone from a friend, not a business.

First thing you'll want to check is if your friend deactivated the phone correctly. Every phone has something called an ESN. An ESN is essentially your phones name, and if it's not deactivated correctly it won't activate under anyone else but the person you got it from. The easiest way to find an ESN is to look under the battery in your phone. ESN's are usually by the word "MEID" or, at the very least, start with an "A" and lots of zeros. Call your service provider and ask them if it is ready to be activated.

Next you'll want that sucker clean! If your friend happened to be pretty rough with their used cell phone it may be best to head over to a store and get a product called "goof off" or something similar. Wipe down your phone's screen and seams to insure it's as brand new looking as you're going to get!

Next you'll want to be sure your friend cleaned the memory. The easiest way to figure this out is check the contacts and text messages. If there is stuff in there, then it's still full of stuff you don't need. factory resetting a used phone is the same as a refurbished phone, so you can use this on anything. Every phone is rather different. If it's a smart phone, the factory reset is usually under settings and then under privacy or security. For normal non-smart phones the factory reset, or restore, can be found under settings and then security. If it is protected by a password, it is typically the last four numbers of the phones phone number.

Next, check the battery for any cracks or puffing up. Both of these can be bad for your phone, and for you. Either order a new battery, or request a new one from the person/business you got it from. Most businesses will happily send you a battery at no extra charge.

Finally, lets get that activated! you can easily do it over the phone by dialing *228 (if you're Verizon), or simply go to your service providers store and ask to get it activated. Some stores may give you trouble as they have a policy to sell phones in their store and try to discourage refurbished or used cell phones. Just press on though! You are paying for their service so you deserve to have any phone within their coverage to be activated regardless if it's new or used!
