Windows 8 Release Preview Now Available for Download, Upgrade from Windows 7 Detailed

Microsoft has released its latest (and last) preview of Windows 8 before the final retail version arrives later this year. If you want to see for yourself how this upcoming "Windows reimagined" operating system looks like, you can download it now from Microsoft.

Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky describes on the MSDN blog what's you'll find in the latest release: Windows 8, Internet Explorer 10, and new Windows 8 apps. The apps may help you take advantage of Windows 8's unique touchscreen Metro interface and the release should be more stable than previous previews.

When I installed the last preview of Windows 8 on an old touchscreen laptop, the laptop actually became more responsive--especially the touchscreen, so I have high hopes for the new OS, though the new interface may be a hard sell for people without touchscreens.

If you don't want to overwrite your current operating system, download the preview setup and use the built-in tools to convert the ISO image to a DVD disc or bootable USB flash drive. Then you can install the preview on another partition or on a virtual machine.

If you're wondering about upgrading to Windows 7 or what happens if you buy a new PC before Windows 8 comes out officially, Microsoft has also confirmed that if you buy a new computer between June 2, 2012 an January 13, 2012 you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. Other offers are apparently to come for existing Windows 7 PC owners.

Here's?what's new in Windows 8 and?the free download again.
