Do You Need 300Mbps Internet Access?

Yesterday, Verizon announced it was doubling its FiOS download speeds and adding new super-fast tiers of 150/65 Mbsp (download/upload) and 300/65 Mbps. This is great news, because everyone wants faster Internet access, right? Those higher-tier plans aren't likely to be cheap, though, so how do you decide which level to go for?

Verizon currently offers a 15/5 Mbps plan which they describe as great for checking email, surfing the web, and downloading large files. 20 high-resolution photos in a 100MB file would take 53.3 seconds to download, though. This low-end tier will still be the same after Verizon upgrades the other plans in June.

The 25/25 Mbps tier, currently described as the option for those who spend a lot of time online (everyone?) and who stream videos or download large files, will now be 50/25 Mbps.

The 35/35 Mbps and 50/20 Mbps tiers, for serious gamers and multi-person households or those who download HD movies, appears to be turning into 75/35 Mbps tier.

So who is the 150/65 Mbps and 300/65 Mbps speeds for? Verizon suggests it's for "households of five or more Internet-connected users who want to receive the best standard- and high-definition video streaming experience on a variety of devices." If you're work depends on downloading media or streaming media, these super-fast tiers may be for you. They're also really attractive if you just can't standing waiting for websites to load or downloads to finish. With a 300 Mbps download speed, you can have a two-hour HD movie (5 GB) on your PC in 2.2 minutes, which is pretty amazing if you think about it.

Pricing should be available next month, but currently the lowest level (unbundled) in NY is $55/month, the 25/25 Mbps plan is $20 more, at $75/month, the 50/20 Mbps plan is $95/month, and the 150/35 Mbps plan is more than double that, $200/month.
