Is Your Laptop or Cellphone Too Hot?

Your cellphone or laptop feels hot enough to light the fire in a barbeque. That sounds just about normal for most compact devices that pack a lot of hardware in an itsy-bitsy case. Here's how to tell if you have cause for concern, however, and what the recommended temperatures are.

Not all hot devices are actually overheating, but because it's easy for a laptop, tablet, or smartphone to pass the line into the overheating danger zone, it's important to keep an eye out for the warning signs. A laptop fan that's constantly running and whirring, for example, is one of the biggest signs. Any device that shuts down randomly is also a huge sign--it's your laptop or smartphone's self-defense mechanism kicking in.

The ideal laptop temperature, depending on who you ask, your comfort level, and the type of processor you have, is somewhere between 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) and 70 degrees C (158 degrees F). A free laptop temperature monitor can not only help you see if your laptop is overheating but also manually adjust your laptop's fan.

Apple recommends a 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit temperature range for your room temperature or working environment when using the iPhone.

That suggests a pretty easy rule of thumb for working on either your smartphone or your laptop: If you feel comfortable working in that environment and your device is at the same temperature, you should be fine. Avoid exposing your laptop or smartphone to killer glove compartment temperatures or the blazing glare of the sun for too long.
