With the release of the iPhone 5 imminent, and the price of the iPhone 4S dropped, what would be the more sound decision? Wait for the iPhone 5's arrival, or sell your old iPhone now to take advantage of the 4S's price drop and buy that instead?
When the iPhone 4S first came out late last year, people were clamoring for a do-over. Most people were expecting the iPhone 5, not something that looks like the iPhone 4 with just an "S" attached to its name. What these people weren't banking on, however, was how much of an upgrade the 4S truly was, the look of the gadget aside.
The iPhone 4S is powered by the A5 chip, a proprietary Apple design that houses a dual-core processor able to pump out 800 MHz of processing juice. It is also equipped with 512 MB of RAM to handle all the heavy duty memory allocation. All this power under the 4S's hood is necessary to run the iOS 5 (and by extension, the iCloud) at optimum running speeds.
The iOS 5 and the iCloud, of course, are the current flag-bearers for Apple's new focus on centralization for their systems designs, a design philosophy that makes user interaction with gadgets much more fluid and convenient by grouping every file under individual central file type hubs, and every Apple gadget under the iCloud's secondary function as a central gadget hub.
While the above should be more than enough to whet an Apple afficionado's appetite, it is the implementation of Siri that makes the iPhone 4S more than just a nominal upgrade. Siri, for those not in the know (yes, all three of you), is the 4S's virtual assistant that is voice-activated to carry out instructions, and responds through "talking" as well. Definitely future-tech stuff right there; except the future is now here.
All these reasons were compelling then, and made me sell my iPhone 3GS immediately to get the 4S. Still, some people were hesitant in making the switch, preferring to wait for the iPhone 5. If you're one of them and you feel that you can hold out for a few more months, then I applaud you; your willpower definitely puts my impulsive self to shame. If, however, the recent 4S price drop seems attractive to you, then consider the following before you make your decision.
Apple is currently working on the quad-core A6 chip, reportedly capable of generating up to 3 GHz of power (or more!). This will of course be installed in the iPhone 5, along with 1 GB of RAM. While price increases for increasing technology aren't directly proportional, industry pundits are still speculating a price above $200 for the iPhone 5 on day one.
The 4S, on the other hand, has dropped down to an SRP of $149. It isn't as powerful as the iPhone 5, of course, but as it stands now, it's still pretty robust. I say trade your old iPhone in now for this one. The iPhone 5 won't be coming out for 3 months, which is still enough time to experience the future of smartphones for relatively cheap with the 4S. Besides, you can always resell the 4S once September comes along.
